Question Asked:

Norton Security products prevent installation of Design-a-Course Author Posted 5 years ago by Dave Smith in Design-a-Course

If you run any of the Symantec security products from Norton, you may be prevented from installing our Author course-ware development tool. These products include Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiVirus, and others.

When you try to download and install Author, you might get a report that a threat was discovered and the downloaded file was deleted. The security product lists the discovered threat under the name, WS.Reputation.1.

This is not a real security threat. Nothing abnormal or suspicious was found in our installer by the antivirus scan. More details about this action are below. The easiest may to avoid the problem with Norton's software and install Author is to temporarily disable your Norton product while you download and install our application.

Recently, Norton added a feature to their security products that calculates a reputation score for files downloaded from the internet. Part of this score comes from the number of their users who have downloaded this file compared to the number of incidents they have on file for it. Here is a link to the Symantec web site with more details on this feature.

We have applied to Symantec to get the Design-a-Course Author program added to their "white-list" of trusted products. Until that process is complete, you will erroneously be prevented from installing Author unless you take steps to prevent Norton from quarantining the file. There are ways other than disabling the security software completely. Check your Norton documentation or the Norton web site for how to disable Insight Protection or how to set up a download folder that is excluded from the security scans.

As always, you can reply here, call us, or send an email if you have further questions about this issue.

We have received confirmation that the current Author version, available from the Design-a-Course web site, has been added to Symantec's product white list. Theoretically, this means it should not be blocked by their antivirus products.
